Weekly Music Pick – Aria on Air (British Airways Banzai!)

This week’s theme is in honor of a friend of… or rather 2 friends of mine, who are both getting married to, well, to each other. For those unfamiliar with the song, it’s called Aria on Air by Malcolm McLaren.Aria means “air” in Italian, so you can imagine the air-fairy feel of the song but according to Wikipedia, an aria is any form of expressive melody, usually performed by 1 singer, with or without orchestral accompaniment. The most famous example of an aria in this era of reality show TV would be Nessun Dorma from the opera Turandot, as popularized by Pavarotti (of 3 Tenors fame) and Paul Potts, mobile phone salesman turned pop tenor.

The first time I heard it was on the watershed CD compilation from Virgin Records, Pure Moods (1994). The CD came out back when the British Airways advert was getting major airtime. My sister (and me) loved that ad with its bright pretty colors and happy tune. This was the advent of  New Age music in Singapore, so it was like the cavemen discovering fire for the first time. When she bought the CD I was introduced to the sounds of Engima, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Enya, Kenny G and many others. It’s 1 of the few CDs I consider my treasured collection, although unfortunately this CD has been lost forever (I believe my sister took it with her to the US…).
