Weekly Music Pick: Thief

This week’s pick is a 2000 hit from alternative rock band Our Lady Peace (OLP for short).

OLP is a Canadian based band that was started in 1992. Given their obscurity on this side of the Pacific, I only discovered their unique sound through, predictably, an Anime music video.

(Video removed due to term of use violation.)
For those interested in the video, please refer to animusicvideos.org.

The AMV features their 2000 hit “Thief” with animation from the sci-fi series Vandread: The 2nd Stage. The lyrics of the song talks about the agony of witnessing a person suffering through a chronic illness, particularly fitting since the scenes in the AMV come from the episode of Vandread that revolves around a chronically ill child.

The  part that resounds most with  me comes from the refrain, which I will quote below:

It’s a long, long getaway; it’s a long, long getaway.
Make it home again, make it home again.
It’s a long, long getaway; it’s a long, long getaway.

Truly gives the feeling of how “epic-ly” long the journey to recovery can be, and the hope and wishes for those who stay by the side of the patient.

Weekly Music Pick: Far and Away Theme

Late, but better late than never….

This week’s music pick is from a semi-obscure movie. Called Far and Away, this 1992 movie stars a younger Tom Cruise opposite Nicole Kidman as two Irish migrants trying to make it big in America.

The theme is nameless, and is often simply called “Theme of Far and Away”. There are at least 2 versions, the lighter and more playful version by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, as well as the more formal version, listed below.

What’s Up People – Many Parodies

For those who don’t recognize the header, it’s the title of Maximum Hormone’s most famous single, What’s Up People. Used as the second opening for the hit anime Death Note, it’s unique for its apologetically hardcore punk sound, rare in a market overflowing with cutesy rabbit-girl-idols and bubblegum pop. The opening itself is inspired, featuring a psychedelic collage of characters, yet using dystopian film noir shadowing techniques to give that dark gritty feel. No one is innocent, with everyone portrayed in shades of gray.

The Gift

A beautiful song. Though I dislike the original version by the Flaming Lips, this acoustic version carries a “purer” feel, drawing more attention to the lyrics. Note: Song is at the end, after the lyrics. Set to clips from the 2008 anime series ef – A tale of melodies -, done by Jasper;isis from Allegretto Productions.

Do you realize – that you have the most beautiful face
Do you realize – we’re floating in space –
Do you realize – that happiness makes you cry
Do you realize – that everyone you know someday will die
