Hope – the strongest drug known to Man

This post originated from the Hongfire forums, a forum that I frequent. You can find it on my hot link tab on the right.

In particular this post is a direct result of a post made in the General Forums, under the thread “Powerful Photography“.

It started as a discussion of powerful photographs, you know, the pictures that move you. It started off on an innocent enough note: war, desecrated bodies, devastation, the usual stuff. It appears that the more a person suffers, the better the photo turns out. Then someone linked a video (who would have guessed) that blew my mind away. No, it’s not Schindler’s List. It’s a 4 and a half min video clip that features a slightly plumpish guy dancing in the middle of the street, at the beach, in front of buildings…. at 42 different countries. The music piece is “Praan”, composed by Garry Schyman. You can find the song on Amazon here. Without further ado, the video.

Someone mentioned that it was Nasa’s Astronomical Photo of the Day, though sadly a subsequent net search turned out nothing. The video btw, is courtesy of Where the Hell is Matt website, which is the travel log of Matt (the plumpish

Four Years and Seven Months

Taken from my original 1000th post @ Hongfire:

Four years and seven months ago I joined a group of individuals who have come together to form a community, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that openness and cooperation leads to a richer life for all participants. Now we stand at a crossroads, testing whether our community, or any

Random Video Game Name Generator

Ever wondered how game designers created those classic names for their games? Ever wondered how the names  Super Mario, Gears of War, Final Fantasy were coined? Now wonder no more, for the top-secret Name Generator has finally been revealed to the unknowing public….. not.

Surfing through the Hongfire forums, I found this little gem. Worth a small chuckle, if nothing else.

Video Game Name Generator Link

Some results from the “clicks”

  • Panzer Rugby Dungeon (Fantasy, sports and WWII – what’s not to like?)
  • Funky Makeout Anthology
  • Indian Typing – 2nd Impact (I have no idea what this is trying to imply)
  • Miniature Metal Mania (actually has a good ring to it, triple alliteration and all)

Democracy

In a nice romantic world out there in the limitless cosmos, there might be a world full of selfless individuals who will live to serve only for the “greater good of mankind”. Sure, we embody such good traits as charity and compassion, but such traits wars with our basic instinct to survive. When you are down to your last loaf of bread and it’s a choice between you and another, the rational choice will be self over others. All humans face this internal dilemma at some point; or as I like to put it, “life is but a struggle for limited resources with other competitors”.

Give me a leader who works out of enlightened self-interest and is transparent about how he goes about it anytime. To do otherwise would be hypocritical.

Mind Games

A forum I frequent recently had an interesting entitled Free your thoughts here!!!:

The mind is the only place where one is truly free. Embrace your power of creation, let your thoughts create words and those words create emotion. When shared with others your thoughts and ideas will outlast your flesh, so don’t hold back. Language is a art form whether your words create anger, happiness, sadness, or inspire is irrelevant so in this topic let your thoughts flow and don’t hold back or worry about offending anyone.

Here’s my “reply”, or rather a parody of a reply.

The mind is the invisible prison, a receptacle for all wayward thoughts, impulses and desires. There are no walls; there is no need for walls. Chains stronger than thought, you are crushed by the embrace of self-recognition. Id desires, ego drives, super-ego demands. When shared with others your thoughts and ideas cease to be your own.  You are judged by things not your own, by rules not your making. Language is the artificial construct of the Other; it limits your anger, happiness, sadness to the constraints of what the Other dictate. Let your hatred flow, your anger, your lust, your envy, your pride. Spare no mercy for others for others do not matter.

And the first thing that popped into my mind when I read the thread was this video.
